How to glue a shelf on the wall
April 2021 – While most shelves are attached to the wall using electric hand tools and mounting brackets, a less commonly used method can also be used: gluing. The advantages of installing a shelf with glue are that you do not have to look for suitable nails, mounting brackets, and the right place on the wall where you can fix nails or use power tools. You can attach both, wooden and plastic shelves.

Shelves with a full back, or a larger surface for gluing, as well as other similar decorative elements, are effectively glued to the wall using the Neostik FIX & SEAL FOR ALL SUBSTRATES or the Neostik FIX EXPRESS mounting glue. For gluing lighter elements, we use the Neostik FIX & SEAL FOR ALL SUBSTRATES; for gluing heavier elements or shelves on which we intend to place heavier objects, we use the Neostik FIX EKSPRESS mounting glue. The latter is also one of the strongest adhesives of its kind available.
Both adhesives bond almost endless types of materials: concrete, marble, brick, plaster, ceramics, wood, chipboard and plywood, cork, aluminium, iron, brass, painted sheet metal, glass, plexiglass, Styrofoam, PVC, ABS, and some types of plastics.

The Neostik FIX & SEAL FOR ALL SUBSTRATES is a versatile and permanently elastic adhesive sealant with excellent adhesion to all surfaces and most building materials. It has excellent mechanical properties, it can be painted, it does not slump in the vertical joints. We can apply it to slightly damp surfaces, as it prevents the formation of mould. It is environmentally friendly, UV stable, resistant to weathering and anti-aging, does not cause corrosion and does not leave stains. It is also resistant to vibrations. We use it for external and internal sealing of expansion joints and penetrations (construction, floors, and facades), for joints between window frames, doors, gypsum boards and concrete elements, as well as for gluing windowsills, slats, and tiles.

The Neostik FIX EKSPRESS mounting glue is a strong, fast, versatile, and durable elastic adhesive for attaching, fixing, and gluing to all surfaces and most building materials. It does not slump in the vertical joints. We can repaint it and apply it to slightly damp surfaces. It prevents the formation of mould, is UV stable, resistant to atmospheric influences and aging, does not cause corrosion and does not leave stains. It is also resistant to vibrations. We use it for various gluing in the household (bathrooms, kitchens), for gluing mirrors, windowsills, slats, ceramic tiles, marking signs, and tiles, as well as in construction.

The process of gluing the shelf to the wall
First, clean the surface of the wall where your new shelf will be installed. You need to remove dust and dirt to ensure proper adhesion of the glue or adhesive sealant.
Then apply the glue to the back of the shelf (the side that will touch the wall), in dots or in lines 7 – 10 cm apart in a thicker layer (7 – 10 mm).
At the end, press the shelf against the wall. In most cases, no additional fixation is required. The glue layer is completely cured in 24 hours.
