Styrofoam Christmas ornaments

December 2021 – The festive season is here! If you haven’t yet decorated your home and Christmas tree, we have an idea that is both easy and cheap – making your own Styrofoam Christmas ornaments.

Styrofoam is a lightweight artificial foam that is mainly used for sound and heat insulation, but its use has spread to design too. Styrofoam Christmas decorations are a great alternative, as they are more durable and will not break if they fall from your Christmas tree. The light material means they won’t cause the branches to sag.

Your little and loved ones can join you in making Styrofoam Christmas ornaments as a family activity. Each member will bring their own unique creative flair for a diverse collection of ornaments that cannot be bought anywhere.

You can choose from many fabrics for your Christmas ornaments, (coloured) glues, sequins, paints, buttons, foils, cotton wool, string, and more. With a touch of inspiration and artistic flair, you will create beautiful Styrofoam Christmas ornaments.

You will need:

  • Styrofoam (the shape depends on your preferences)
  • Decorating materials (you can choose from buttons of any size and colour, paper, sequins, cotton wool, napkins, coloured paper, ribbons, fabrics, etc)
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Hook
  • Brushes
  • Paints (acrylic paints, tempera or felt-tip pens) or paint spray
  • Neostik AQUA BOND EXPRESS

Neostik AQUA BOND EXPRESS is an adhesive specifically designed for products that are exposed to high humidity or cold water.Compared to other types of white adhesives, Neostik AQUA BOND EXPRESS adhesive binds faster and is particularly suitable for gluing Styrofoam elements together.

Styrofoam is soft and smooth, and can easily be painted and decorated. You can use Styrofoam that comes in different shapes for your Christmas ornaments. In an arts and crafts shop, you will find Styrofoam in shapes including balls, snowflakes, stars, pyramids, dolls, gifts, cones, wreaths, cubes and animals. Different shapes of Styrofoam allow you to make differently shaped ornaments. A Styrofoam ball serve as a great base for making classic Christmas ornaments and winter motifs, such as a snowman or Santa Claus. With whichever Styrofoam shape you choose, you can let your imagination run wild and create your own unique decoration. The Styrofoam shapes can be glued together with the help of Neostik AQUA BOND EXPRESS adhesive. If combining several pieces of Styrofoam, glue them together first, and then decorate the surface.

Styrofoam ornaments usually come in a variety of colours. If you can’t find your preferred colour, classic white is the perfect base for creating your unique Christmas ornaments. Before doing more decorating, decide where the top of your ornament is so that you can finish by adding a hanging hook.

Start by painting the Styrofoam. You can use acrylic paints, tempera, thicker felt-tip pens, or graffiti spray. Wait for the paint to dry before proceeding with decorating the Styrofoam. Once the paint is dry, you can apply additional materials for the final decoration, such as glitter, ribbons, various fabrics (e.g. for bows), cotton wool, hairy wires, rhinestones, napkins, tassels, paper cut-outs and any other decorative elements of your choice. Brighten up your Styrofoam ornaments by gluing your decorative elements using the transparent adhesive Neostik AQUA BOND EXPRESS.

Finish by making a hole in the top of your ornament to insert the hook for hanging it on your Christmas tree. Thread a piece of string through the hook to hang it.
